If you want to see the future of education, you’re in the right spot.
In 2005 the Cayman Islands made an unprecedented pledge to bring about much needed transformation of their education system. Leveraging the advantages of a small population and thriving economy the changes have been far-reaching on a scale that other countries find difficult to rival. Driven by a committed government and some of the most brilliant minds on the international scene, the Cayman Islands are not only embracing but increasingly leading cutting edge developments in technology, facilities, human capital development and teaching and learning styles. The world is watching this one, so leave your comments, link to the site and get in touch if you want to know more. The Best in the World

The Lighthouse School has every reason to be proud. They have helped to produce some of the best in the entire world. The four athletes that represented the Cayman Islands at the 2007 World Summer Special Olympics in Shanghai China, are all current or former students of the Lighthouse School, and in their respective fields, they are the best in the world. They are Kevin Anglin, Chris Sampson, Andrew Smilley and Waide McLaughlin.

The athletes got down to serious business in China after the initial rest period following their arrival in the country and the exciting opening ceremony. Hard work and preparation paid off as this team brought home the most medals per capita of any team attending the World Games. The final tally read four gold, one silver and one bronze in swimming for Waide and Andrew, and two gold, one bronze and one fifth place ribbon for the track and field athletes Kevin and Chris. All four athletes won gold medals in at least one of their events!
Accompanying the athletes were Head of Delagation Kim Landry, Deputy Head of Delagation Susan Whittaker, Aquatics Coach Penny McDowall and Athletics Coach Lazarus Moraes. Both Susan and Penny are current teachers at the Lighthouse School and have been involved for many years with Special Olympics.

In the photo above, (from left) Chris, Andrew, Waide and Kevin strike a merry pose with their medals proudly displayed. Congratulations to the Lighthouse School, the team of officials and coaches and most importantly, the athletes! The Department of Education Services is so very proud of your achievements. (MR)
